Edoardo Mortara – what I learnt from karting… Photo NewsWhat were the most valuable lessons that you learnt from your karting career at Tony Kart? Where do I begin? There were so many different things I learnt from karting, but the most valuable lessons were the basic techniques of race craft. By that I mean everything: how to overtake, how to put together a quick lap, and an introduction to set-up, as well as so many other things. But everything was really just an introduction. There is such a lot to learn in such a short space of time, that you only have the opportunity to take in the basics. Karting answers the fundamental question you always have: am I good enough to pursue racing as a career? Thankfully, my time at Tony Kart persuaded me that it was worthwhile for me to continue my racing career. I will always be grateful to them for giving me the perfect start that I needed. What about working with a team – does karting teach you about that? For sure. One of the things you have to remember is that when you start racing in karts you are very young, so you have a lot to learn about life as well as about racing. Because you are suddenly put in a team environment, with a lot of very experienced and dedicated people, it teaches you to grow up quite quickly. You have to try and be as professional as all the other people around you, even though you are so much younger. Normally, as a kid, you are used to having everything done for you but karting teaches you responsibility and how to work with other people. These lessons are probably even more valuable than everything you learn on the track. Would you recommend Tony Kart as a way to embark on a motor sport career? Unreservedly: although life there is not easy. I mean that in a very positive way: the team has a very high level of professionalism which is constantly pushing you up to the next level, in the same way that they are always pushing themselves up to the next level. This is what you need if you want to succeed in motor sport; you can never allow yourself to slip into the comfort zone. The team’s equipment is always brilliantly prepared and you are put straight into an environment that prepares you for performing at your maximum – both in and out of the kart. I owe Tony Kart a lot and I would like to thank them for everything they have done for me.
