MORTARA OFF TO A PROMISING START IN VALLELUNGA
French-Italian driver Edoardo Mortara has finished in fourth place after the third round of the Italian Formula Renault Championship at Vallelunga. The Prema Power team driver will race again tomorrow on the Italian circuit, having scored his first podium at the opening round in Mugello two weeks ago.
Edoardo qualified third on the grid at Vallelunga, despite a free practice session on Friday that was geared towards testing rather than setting a quick time. He was only 0.02 seconds off taking the runner-up spot on the grid – an excellent result given his lack of experience.
The former karting champion made a good start but lost a position when he was caught in a pack of traffic at the second corner of the demanding circuit, close to Rome. He tried to regain the place, but sensibly decided not to take any major risks in view of the second race tomorrow.
The 19 year-old said: “Of course I feel annoyed to have lost a place in that incident at turn two, but sometimes it is better to let a position go than risk getting involved in an accident – particularly as we need the car for the second race tomorrow! Overall, it’s been a good weekend so far and I’m learning so much all the time. That’s the priority for me at the moment, and I would like to thank the Prema Power team for giving me the equipment to fight at the front throughout all the races I have done with them. Tomorrow we have a tough task ahead of us, but I’m sure we will come away with plenty more experience and I look forward to the chance to practise my overtaking skills.”
The grid for race two in the Italian Formula Renault Championship is formed in order of fastest lap in race one. Some drivers who did not figure prominently in the opening race put on new tyres to set one or maximum two laps with the aim of catapulting themselves up the grid on Sunday. As a result, the winner of race one will start from 12th place, while Edoardo will be faced with a fight from 17th place.
Vallelunga is the second meeting of eight in the Italian Formula Renault Championship, which puts together a high-quality field of more than 30 competitors in identical 2-litre single-seater cars. There are two races at each meeting: one on Saturday and one on Sunday.
