VICTORY FOR MORTARA IN BARCELONA!
 Signature Team driver Edoardo Mortara took a resounding victory in race one at Barcelona – round eight of the Formula 3 Euroseries – becoming the first rookie ever to accomplish such a feat since the current race format was adopted two years ago.
The French-Italian driver, in only his second year of racing cars, started the weekend methodically to find the best set-up for qualifying together with his engineer. Barcelona is well-known for hosting the Spanish Grand Prix and it is also extensively used a testing venue, but on this occasion the Euroseries drivers were using the short version of the track.
After an excellent qualifying session, the 20 year-old claimed sixth place on the grid, which became fifth when another competitor dropped ten places after a pre-race engine change. With just a few minutes to go before the race, rain fell – causing the start to be delayed for all the drivers to switch to wet tyres. Despite this uncertainty, and the fact that he had never tested in these conditions, Edoardo made a lightning start through traffic to take second by the first corner.
He then set about race leader Nico Hulkenberg, and on lap 8 took the lead after the German’s mistake. Having got past his key rival, Edoardo then settled into a consistent rhythm despite the unpredictable conditions. He drove faultlessly to claim his second win of the year and the first ever victory for a rookie on a Saturday’s race.
Sunday, by contrast, was a disappointment. Having started race two from eighth place on the grid according to the rules, Edoardo was caught up in a messy collision on the first lap and his day’s work was over on the spot.
The 20 year-old commented: “Race two was not what I was hoping for, but that’s not what I’m going to remember about this weekend! I think this is the most comfortable I’ve felt in the car all year and I really believe we’ve turned a corner. A huge part of the credit for this must go to the Signature team, which has done a fantastic job all weekend. In terms of the way I’m working with my engineer and driving the car, I really feel that it’s coming together now. It’s been a really good weekend, but I’m already looking forward to the next race now – which is very soon. My aim is to continue this momentum, so that we can challenge for victory once again.”
After Barcelona, Edoardo is second in the rookie's championship and eighth in the overall standings with just two rounds of the season left to go.
The next race will be at Nogaro in France this weekend.
