FIVE QUESTIONS TO EDOARDO…
 How did the 2008 season go for you in the end?
“Well, we still have Macau coming up this weekend, so strictly speaking it’s not over yet! But our F3 Euroseries season was a big success. I have to say that it was something of an emotional journey: we had some very strong results at the beginning of the year, then a slight dip in the mid-season that we had to fight back from. Luckily we were able to dig deep and we had a strong end to the season, which enabled us to secure second place in the F3 Euroseries: a tremendous result for what was only Volkswagen’s first full season in the championship.”
Which lessons will you take away from this season?
“I think we all learnt a lot, and I came out of the season with even more admiration for Volkswagen and Signature than I had already Both teams have been incredibly professional from start to finish, and the result is that we genuinely achieved more than we first thought was possible. One area we needed to work on was getting straight on the pace in qualifying, but this is something that we had addressed by the end of the year. I also learnt more about how to deal with traffic as I sometimes found myself right in the middle of the pack. It’s been a very good learning experience.”
On now to Macau: what are your thoughts about this legendary race?
“What can I say? It’s an absolutely classic event. I suppose it is to Formula 3 what the Monaco Grand Prix is to Formula 1. Everybody wants to win at Macau and it is a race that builds reputations. It’s a supreme test of skill, but like Monaco you need a bit of luck on your side as well. It’s the sort of place where you really have to think on your feet, so it pays to be flexible when it comes to strategy. Overtaking is possible but not easy, so it also helps to qualify as high up as possible.”
Is it a circuit that suits you?
“I think so, yes. Although we didn’t manage to get a result in Macau last year we still had a very strong race and passed a lot of cars. I love street circuits because as a driver you get the chance to improvise. There is no set way to approach these races: you just have to rely on your wits and your ability to interpret what is happening around you. This will be the second time that I am racing at Macau, so I hope I can put my past experience to good use. Signature have won at Macau before and so have Volkswagen: back in 1990 with a certain Michael Schumacher!”
How far advanced are your plans for next year?
“There are a few options that I am looking at, but we’re in no rush to make a decision. Of course it would be nice to step up a category, maybe towards GP2, but Formula 3 is so competitive that it could also be good for me to have another season there. Or even to try something completely different in order to increase my overall experience. Let’s just wait and see…”
