CARBONE CAUGHT OUT BY CIRCUMSTANCES AT OKAYAMA Photo NewsUp-and-coming Brazilian Fabio Carbone was compromised by a strategy that did not suit the conditions at Okayama, round four of this year’s Formula Nippon Championship. Once more, the unpredictable Japanese weather during qualifying meant that the Dandelion Racing driver was unable to find consistent enough conditions to secure a clean run in the heavy traffic. The end result was that he ended up 14th on the grid. Owing to his grid position, the team decided to fill Fabio’s car up with fuel from the start in order to maximise the first stint and hopefully move up the field. However, nobody could have predicted an incident-packed race with a lengthy safety car period. This meant that Fabio was running with a heavy car for much longer than he expected. Despite this handicap, the Brazilian climbed up to an excellent seventh overall – but unfortunately he emerged from his pit stop just behind a slower car. Once more he found himself with a heavy car at the worst possible moment, and this prevented him from moving further up the field. After driving a defensive race, Fabio finished an unlucky 13th – but he was still determined to see the positive side. The 26 year-old commented: “Nobody is to blame for what was just an unlucky weekend for us. It seemed that everything that could have worked against us actually did! In qualifying we suffered a lot because of the weather, then in the race we were compromised by a heavy fuel load that would have helped us had there not been a lengthy safety car period. On the plus side, we were the third-fastest Honda runner and we were able to test the car in a wide variety of conditions. I am confident that this experience will help us in the many races that are still to come.” The fifth round of the Formula Nippon Championship takes place at Suzuka from July 7-8 but Fabio will be in action before then with the Nakajima Racing team at Sepang in Malaysia, at the fourth round of the Japanese Super GT Championship from June 23-24.
