TOUGH WEEKEND FOR MORTARA AT MAGNY COURS
 Signature team driver Edoardo Mortara has endured a tough weekend at Magny-Cours, round four of the Formula 3 Euroseries.
The meeting took place at the same venue as the French Formula 1 Grand Prix, but for Edoardo the circuit holds bad memories as it was the scene of his violent accident in testing less than two months ago.
The action got underway with the all-important qualifying session, but unfortunately Edoardo did not have a good feeling with the car or the track. With the margins so close in the hotly-contested Formula 3 Euroseries, Edoardo’s time was only good enough for 14th on the grid. He dropped even further down the order when it transpired that he had inadvertently stayed out too long after the chequered flag, incurring a 5-place penalty for race 1.
In race one, Edoardo made a decent start, but was not able to find a good enough pace to proceed in his usual attacking style. As a result he ended up 16th, which would also be his starting position for race two bfore to move up 14th after the penalty of other drivers for non respect of yellow flags.
The second race was problem-free for the French-Italian, but again he did not feel particularly hooked up to the car. After a tough contest, Edoardo finished 12th.
These results mean that he is currently 7th in the overall championship and still leading in the rookie championship.
Edoardo – who won in Brands Hatch only last month – said: “This experience at Magny-Cours only highlighted something I knew already: that it is absolutely vital to get the weekend off to a good start with a strong performance in qualifying. For a number of reasons we did not succeed in doing that, which compromised both races for us. I think that maybe the accident I had in testing here blunted my confidence slightly, but mostly I was not able to hook up with the car and the track conditions quickly enough – which unfortunately sometimes just happens. The car itself was as usual very good, and I’d like to thank the team for another excellent job. Hopefully we can be back fighting for victory again at the next race.”
The next round of the Formula 3 Euroseries takes place at Mugello in Italy from July 14-15
