MORTARA TAKES DEBUT WIN AT BRANDS HATCH! Photo NewsSignature team driver Edoardo Mortara has claimed his debut win in the Formula 3 Euroseries at Brands Hatch. The French-Italian started race two from pole position, having finished eighth in race one, and conserved his advantage to the finish – despite constant pressure from championship leader Sebastien Buemi. The result means that Edoardo, in only his second year of racing cars, extends his lead of the rookie’s championship. The 20 year-old’s first win – in his fourth Formula 3 race – has also boosted his overall championship prospects. Coming a full seven weeks after the opening races at Hockenheim, the second round of the Euroseries took place at Brands Hatch in England: a former venue for the British Grand Prix. Edoardo qualified ninth for race one, with a time just three-tenths off pole postion, and finished eighth. He started from pole position for race two, and made an excellent start to pull out an impressive advantage over the opening laps. However, all his good work was undone when a safety car came out – meaning that Buemi was able to close up again. At the re-start, Edoardo made another perfect getaway to once more pull out a consistent advantage. However, Buemi was constantly on his tail, and Edoardo soon faced a new challenge on the short Brands Hatch circuit: lapping other cars. Despite his inexperience, Mortara passed the backmarkers cleanly, in order to win the half-hour race by nearly a second: a large margin in the hotly contested Formula 3 Euroseries. He commented: “It’s an amazing feeling to win my first car race: as a driver this is a moment you remember for the rest of your life! I’d like to thank my engineer and the whole Signature team above all for giving me a perfect car all weekend. There was a lot to take on board quickly, but in the end the race was like a dream. It was difficult to know how hard to push at first, but soon I found a comfortable pace. This obviously gives me a lot more confidence for the future – I’ve still got a lot a lot to learn in this hugely competitive series but I’ve developed a taste for winning now!” The next round of the Formula 3 Euroseries takes place at the Norisring in Germany from June 22-24.
