MORTARA IN POINTS AND ON POLE AT BRANDS HATCH
Signature team driver Edoardo Mortara has finished the opening race of round two of the Formula 3 Euroseries in a strong eighth place – meaning that he will start race two from pole position. This will be the first pole of Edoardo’s car racing career.
Coming a full seven weeks after the opening races at Hockenheim, round two of the Euroseries took place at Brands Hatch in England: a former venue for the British Grand Prix.
The Formula 3 Euroseries used just the short circuit rather than the full Grand Prix circuit, meaning that a lap took just over 42 seconds to complete. In such a short distance, every thousandth of a second counted and the French-Italian did a fantastic job to qualify in ninth position, just three-tenths of a second off the pole time and top rookie.
In hot conditions, Edoardo made a good start to secure eighth and then lapped at a consistent pace to the end – despite constant pressure from his team mate behind him. The result meant that he finished eighth overall and top rookie – putting him in the lead of the rookie championship.
It also meant that Edoardo earned his first pole position, as the top eight in the Formula 3 Euroseries are reversed for race two. Tomorrow, the 20 year-old will be aiming for his first victory.
He commented: “It was a tricky race, as I had a lot to lose. I realised as soon as I got up to eighth place that I had the chance of starting from pole position tomorrow and also scoring 10 points towards the rookie championship. So I concentrated on defending my position and keeping a consistent pace, particularly as it is notoriously difficult to overtake at Brands Hatch. It was definitely a strategic race today and I’d like to thank the team for giving me a car that enabled me to do my job perfectly. Of course I would like to aim for my first victory tomorrow, now that I have this fantastic opportunity to start from pole position, but the the important thing is really to get a good start, to learn as much as possible, and to consolidate my place in both championships.”
