MORTARA FLIES IN PRE-EVENT TESTING Photo NewsFrench-Italian driver Edoardo Mortara has kicked off his testing campaign for the Formula 3 Euroseries in style, setting an unofficial fastest time in Estoril. Edoardo will drive for the France-based Signature team this year, with which he is already working well. After a shakedown test in his Dallara-Mercedes on the French circuit of Nogaro, Edoardo and Signature moved to Estoril in Portugal for some more detailed set-up testing, along with some of the other front-running teams. The technically-demanding Portuguese Grand Prix circuit was entirely new to Edoardo who is still in only his second year of racing cars and he spent the first morning getting to know it. In the afternoon, Edoardo tried new tyres on his car for the first time and set a competitive time despite the fact that new tyres tended to work more effectively in the cooler conditions of the morning. For the second day, Edoardo made some alterations to the set-up and adjusted the gear ratios. After running with used tyres for a while he switched to new tyres and set a time of 1m31.23s, which was unofficially recorded as being the fastest time of the entire test. The 20 year-old looked for even more speed during the afternoon, adjusting some other aspects of the car¹s set-up, but it turned out to be the wrong decision and the car became unstable. Mortara said: ³I am very happy with the team, the car and the progress we have made during the test. It felt very comfortable, but I was not looking too closely at the times as they do not count for much in an unofficial test. The basic pattern seems to be that so far we have front-running pace, which is a good basis to work from. These are still early days and there is a lot of work ahead, but things are going well. I need to build up my own level of experience as well, which is not extensive.² Mortara¹s first race meeting will be at Hockenheim, Germany, from April 21-22, but he will test his car again in Nogaro at the end of this month.
