CARBONE'S 2007 SEASON KICKS OFF IN STYLE
Brazilian star Fabio Carbone has kick-started his 2007 campaign in the Formula Nippon Championship and Japanese Super GT Championship with two crucial test sessions. It has been an action-packed week for the 26 year-old, who has been testing his GT Honda NSX in Japan and his Formula Nippon in Malaysia.
Fabio will compete for the prestigious Nakajima team on the Japanese Super GT Championship and he drove the car for only the third time this week at Suzuka. During the two-day test, he focussed on trying to set quick lap times using different tyres: a speciality at which Fabio excels! Towards the end of the session the Brazilian undertook some longer runs as part of a simulated race performance. Fabio encountered no problems at all during the test, with the car running quickly and reliably throughout. The next official GT test at Suzuka will be the most vital one however, as it will include nearly all the cars that will contest the championship this year. It will also be the last test before the opening race meeting of the season at Suzuka, from March 16-18.
Fabio also completed several laps at the famous Formula 1 circuit at Sepang in Malaysia with his Formula Nippon, run by the Dandelion Racing team. Over two days, he completed several long runs in order to accumulate more experience at the wheel of the car and carry out some durability tests. He also tried out some new sets of tyres in the pursuit of quick lap times, particularly under qualifying conditions. Fabio comfortably set the fastest time on the second day of the test, but he impressed the Dandelion team with his consistency as much as with his outright speed. The Brazilian also got in some pit stop practice with his new team, in preparation for the first Nippon race meeting of the season at Fuji from March 30-April 1.
Fabio said: ³It¹s been a busy start to what is going to be an extremely busy year for me, with 18 races. I felt comfortable with both cars straight away, even though they are very different. The most encouraging thing for me is that we were able to set quick times straight away at both tests: I was particularly encouraged by the fastest time at the Formula Nippon test in Sepang, which is a fantastic circuit. The GT test went extremely well also, and I had a lot of fun getting the maximum out of the Honda NSX. Now we will analyse all the data carefully in order to prepare for the next test sessions. After that we will be racing for real and I can¹t wait for the first green light!²
