CARBONE ON PODIUM AT FIRST JAPANESE SUPER GT RACE
Brazilian star Fabio Carbone has started the Japanese GT season with a podium finish at the first race in Suzuka. The Nakajima Racing Honda NSX driver had no problems at all throughout the action-packed race to finish third overall.
Suzuka is one of the most breath-taking circuits of the season, featuring epic corners such as 130R and Spoon. The circuit length is 5.8 kilometres and the GT crews had to complete 52 demanding laps.
The Japanese Super GT Championship involves close competition and clever teamwork, with two drivers sharing a car for each race. For the opening race at Suzuka, it was the turn of Fabio’s team mate Loic Duval to qualify the car – using the settings that he and Fabio had established together during pre-race testing. The qualifying session went well, with Fabio’s Honda lining up second on the grid, and the car went on to take a comfortable podium thanks to an accomplished performance from both drivers. The only setback the team encountered was a drive-through penalty, which cost the crew a chance to fight for victory.
Carbone said: “We’ve got the season off to a really good start, with a podium finish, that underlines the value of our good preparation for the race. I’d like to thank the Nakajima team for their professionalism, which has enabled us to start as we mean to go on. It was a pity about the drive-through penalty, but these things happen; we win and lose as a team. These are still very early days and there are many areas where we can make more progress, but the partnership with the team and with Loic is working very well – we have been team mates in the past – and there is a lot to build on for the future. I’m looking forward now to consolidating our pace in the next race.”
The next round of the Japanese Super GT Championship takes place from April 7-8 on the Okayama International Circuit, but Fabio will be in action before then when he swaps the Honda GT car for a Formula Nippon single-seater. The opening round of the Formula Nippon Championship, where Fabio will drive for Dandelion Racing, takes place the weekend after next in Fuji.
