CARBONE READY FOR MACAU GRAND PRIX
This weekend’s Macau Grand Prix is one of the most prestigious events on the Formula 3 calendar, held on a twisty and spectacular street circuit on the far eastern peninsula of Macau.
The event is one of the few opportunities for the best drivers in Formula 3 across the world to meet and compete against each other. Just 30 places are available on the grid for one of the biggest motor sport festivals outside of F1. A win in Macau is enough to elevate a young driver to the premier category of the sport, as proved by Ayrton Senna, Michael Schumacher and Mika Hakkinen.
Brazilian Fabio Carbone, who has driven for the Threebond team on the Japanese Formula 3 Championship this season, has come tantalisingly close to victory before against an elite band of young drivers. In 2003, Carbone secured pole position on the demanding Macau circuit, and narrowly missed out on victory by finishing second.
His qualifying performance on the event last year would also have earned him a place on the front row, had it not been for an uncharacteristic mistake on the final sector. The bumpy and twisty roads of Macau constitute a uniquely challenging environment that Fabio loves, and the 25 year-old will be giving it his best shot once more at the 53rd Macau Grand Prix this weekend. Fabio will again be driving his familiar Threebond Dallara, which carried him to fourth place in this year’s Japanese F3 Championship.
Fabio commented: “Macau is a circuit that I absolutely love as it is a massive challenge. There is a combination of very fast straights and extremely tight corners, which means that your commitment and braking has to be exactly right in order to succeed. I’m very pleased that we have done well here in the past, as this circuit is a proper test of man and machine. We have to acknowledge realistically though that our team does not have the same resources as some others, so we will have to push harder than ever this weekend. But this is a circuit where a driver can make the difference. We could even get some rain but I don’t mind the variable levels of grip, as I have always gone strongly on wet races. I’m looking forward to getting on track and seeing what we can do…”
The first free practice session in Macau takes place on Thursday 16 November. There is a qualification race on Saturday 18 November, before the main race on Sunday 19 November.
