CARBONE UPBEAT DESPITE A FRUSTRATING FINISH
Brazilian Fabio Carbone was denied a podium at the final race of this year’s
Japanese Formula 3 Championship by a blown engine at Motegi. The weekend had started well for the Threebond driver, who finished the opening race in fourth place – putting him in a strong position to take third overall in the championship.
The broken engine, on the second lap, ended his hopes on the spot but Fabio is still upbeat at the end of an extremely positive season. In total, the Brazilian claimed three pole positions, two wins, eight podiums and 169 points, finishing fourth in the championship.
Fabio said: “The last race was frustrating for us, but these things can happen in racing: it’s nobody’s fault. We should not let that one incident take anything away from what has been an extremely good season. It’s fair to say that our team did not have the resources of some of our competitors, but despite this we have always been competitive and sprung a few surprises. The two race wins we had at Sugo showed just what we are capable of when everything works well. I would very much like to thank everybody in the Threebond team for all the hard work they have put in throughout the year: it has been very much appreciated. The team’s dedication and commitment has been excellent.”
Conditions in Motegi were dry, and Fabio underlined his pace by setting third-fastest time in both free practice sessions. He qualified fifth for race one, and an excellent third for race two.
Fabio’s next focus is the prestigious Macau Formula 3 Grand Prix on November 19: one of the highlights of the season. The Brazilian is a master of the twisty street circuit, having claimed pole position in 2003 and finished the race in a strong second.
