MORTARA TRIUMPHS OVER ADVERSITY!
Prema team driver Edoardo Mortara has scored his best result in the Formula Renault Eurocup after an eventful weekend at Le Mans, the penultimate round of the series.
The French circuit – famous for the 24 Hours – was hit by intermittent rain storms, making the on-track action as unpredictable as the weather. As usual Edoardo excelled in these delicate conditions. He made up 18 places in race two, finishing an excellent seventh, to rack up his second consecutive points finish in two meetings. Furthermore, as two of the competitors in front of him were not registered to score Eurocup championship points, he claimed six points for fifth place!
Edoardo enjoys the renowned La Sarthe circuit, but he hit a major setback early in the single qualifying session by running wide and damaging the rear of the car slightly. As a result, he qualified 25th for both races. The French-Italian driver’s luck did not change in race one, when he had to steer into the gravel trap to avoid an accident in front of him.
Race two was held on a wet track – but this was good news for Edoardo. As the rain fell harder several competitors slid off the track, causing a number of safety car periods.
With just five laps gone, Edoardo had already worked his way up into the top 10 with some daring overtaking manoeuvres.
But during the second safety car period, it nearly all went wrong for him. Once more two cars collided in front of Edoardo and he could not avoid hitting them. He bent his car’s front wing and lost the front bodywork. Despite this considerable handicap he raced on to overtake more cars and record his best finish of the year in this category, setting a best lap that was only 0.4s off the fastest lap of the race!
The former karting champion commented: “I think this has been the most dramatic weekend of my racing career, but it proves what I have always believed: you should never give up. The weekend started off badly but as soon as I saw the rain I knew we had a good chance. The car was very difficult to handle in the closing laps after I hit the cars that spun in front of me, but we could still push hard to the end. I’d like to thank my team for their hard work, and now we look forward to continuing this form at the next race!”
The final round of the Formula Renault Eurocup takes place in Barcelona, Spain, from September 28-29. Before this, Edoardo will be in action again at the next and final round of the Italian Formula Renault Championship at Monza from October 7-8.
