TOUGH TIMES FOR MORTARA IN TURKEY... Photo NewsPrema Powerteam driver Edoardo Mortara has suffered a trying weekend at Istanbul Park, during the second round of the Formula Renault Eurocup. Although the French-Italian came away with little by way of results, he has learnt some valuable lessons for the future about set-up and racecraft. Istanbul Park was new to the Renault championship this year, meaning that some of the drivers and teams, including Prema, had no previous data to establish their set-up while other teams had already tested there last year. With only a limited amount of time to learn the track, Edoardo struggled to find a good set-up – particularly for the middle sector. As a result he qualified in 23rd place for both races. Race one came to a premature end for Edoardo after he was involved a collision that was not his fault. But race two seemed much more promising, as a determined Edoardo pushed hard and climbed as high as 11th overall. Then he was forced to go wide in order to avoid a collision, and the result was that he dropped back down to 24th. Nonetheless Edoardo still did not give up and drove at maximum attack to make up four more places –eventually finishing an adventurous race in 20th position. The 19 year-old rising star said: “We can’t say that this was a good weekend, but racing is like that sometimes. I’m happy with our performance in race two: I believe we could have finished in the top 10 which would have been a good achievement under the circumstances. Still, I think the real test of a driver’s strength comes when things are going badly rather than when they are going well, and I’m determined to face up to this challenge and bounce back. We have a good idea of what the problem was – for some reason we could not find a good set-up for the middle sector of the circuit, which is where we lost the most time. I felt that I was driving well: if I had pushed any harder I would have gone off. We just need to work harder at finding the right set-up more quickly, and I know that this is something that will come with experience.” Edoardo’s next outing will be at Hockenheim from July 8-9, for rounds nine and ten of the Italian Formula Renault Championship where he currently lies fourth in the points standings. The next round of the European Championship takes place at Misano from July 15-16. Istanbul, 18/06/06
