CHALLENGING WEEKEND FOR MORTARA AT THE NURBURGRING Photo NewsPrema Powerteam driver Edoardo Mortara has faced a challenging weekend at the Nurburgring, round four of the Formula Renault Eurocup. The legendary Nurburgring is regular fixture on the Grand Prix calendar, and while the classic Nordschleife is no longer used for single-seater racing, the modern circuit still provides a huge technical challenge. The bad weather all over Europe this weekend particularly affected the Nurburgring, high up in the Eifel mountain range. Although it did not rain during the actual races, changeable conditions characterised the whole weekend – making a difficult track even more challenging. Edoardo’s potential was underlined by the free practice sessions on Friday, where he was able to set a sixth-fastest time. However, he was not able to translate this promise into a solid qualifying pace. With the competition in the Formula Renault Eurocup closer than it has ever been, Edoardo could only manage 20th on the grid for race one and 18th for race two. The French-Italian did a decent job in race one to make up three places and finish 17th, but problems in race two meant that he ended up 20th. The former karting champion slid wide on a slippery corner, meaning that he lost several places and had to fight his way back up the order. Edoardo said: “It’s been a challenging weekend that I am determined to learn from. Our times in free practice show that we have the pace, but this means nothing if we are not able to convert that into a strong qualifying performance. I’m obviously disappointed, but I’ve got to look very closely at the way I work with the team in order for being able to carry on with the free practice trend as quickly as possible. If we can master that, I feel confident that we can fight at the front from the next race. In racing it’s normal to have problems sometimes – but you have to learn from them and I am always pushing myself in that direction.” The next round of the Formula Renault Eurocup takes place at Donington Park, Great Britain, from September 8-9.
