MORTARA SHINES AT SPA!
French driver Edoardo Mortara has put in what he describes as “the best drive of my career” during the second race of this weekend's Italian Formula Renault Championship meeting at Spa.
The Prema Powerteam driver ended up seventh after qualifying 10th – but this was not the most remarkable aspect of his race. Instead, it was his meteoric rise through the field after dropping to 16th place that was a highlight of the meeting. Edoardo also came away with fastest lap on his first visit to what is widely acknowledged as the most challenging and spectacular circuit of the season.
At the start of the race Edoardo unfortunately stalled his engine, but as the start line in Spa is downhill he was able to bump-start his car. By the time the former karting champion got going, he had dropped down to 16th place. He refused to give up, and started to scythe his way through the field. As the race went on, Edoardo got faster and faster: setting the quickest lap and overtaking several cars.
The 19 year-old commented: “Today has been the best day’s racing I have enjoyed in my career so far. I just wish the race had gone on longer. I made a mistake at the start as I was trying to get away as fast as I could, but instead I ended up in 16th place. I was annoyed at myself so I just tried to make up as many places as possible. The car was set up beautifully, so I found it really easy to drive and I would like to thank the Prema Powerteam for all their hard work. This race was about a lot more than the end result. Spa is a fantastic circuit to drive, and this weekend will do a lot for my confidence in the future.”
Edoardo’s efforts on Sunday, coupled with his third place in the opening race on Saturday, means that he maintains fourth place in the Italian Formula Renault Championship. He will soon be in action again at the second round of the Formula Renault Eurocup in Istanbul, from June 16-18. The next round of the Italian Formula Renault Championship takes place in Hockenheim from July 8-9.
