MORTARA ON THE PODIUM AT SPA
Prema Powerteam driver Edoardo Mortara has finished the first race of this weekend's Italian Formula Renault Championship meeting at Spa in third place.
The French-Italian driver qualified ninth, despite having very little experience of the track in dry conditions. He made an excellent start, avoiding an accident between two competitors on the opening lap, to climb to fourth. Then the safety car came out, and Edoardo had to think on his feet to take advantage of the re-start. When the action resumed, Edoardo pushed hard to make up another place, while defending his position from some very competitive drivers behind. Yet another fantastic overtaking move at the start ensured that he ended up with a well-deserved podium place.
The 19 year-old commented: ³It feels fantastic to take another podium especially on such a legendary and challenging circuit as Spa. I had a very good feeling with my car and I was able to make up several places on the first lap, before the safety car came out. I had to think hard about how to deal with that, and take care to avoid losing any places at the re-start.
Luckily everything went fine, so this result has given me a lot of confidence for tomorrow¹s race.²
Edoardo has it all to do again tomorrow, at the second race of the meeting on the legendary Belgian circuit. This time he will start from 10th place, so another fast but trouble-free run is needed. Edoardo¹s objectives will be to underline his speed and bring home some valuable championship points. As was the case today, weather conditions tomorrow are expected to be dry.
