MORTARA CLIMBS LEARNING CURVE IN ZOLDER
French-Italian driver Edoardo Mortara has endured a frustrating weekend at Zolder for the first round of the Formula Renault Eurocup. Nonetheless, the Prema Powerteam driver comes away from the Belgian event with more valuable experience under his belt and some important lessons learnt for the future.
A new hit-qualifying session system for race one meant to have not more than 6 timed laps to secure a best grid slot. Probably not the most suitable qualifying system for rookies which saw Edoardo starting the opening race from 23rd place on the grid. He got off to an excellent start and eventually worked his way to 15th place by the finish, having overtaken eight cars.
The starting order for race two was decided in order of fastest lap during race one which race one started on dump conditions. On a drying circuit, many drivers changed from wet to slick tyres in order to set a fast lap for race two. Edoardo was part of those who opted to stay on same slick rubbers throughout the race and so was not able to set a time that would be fast enough for a top place on the grid. He started race two, which was held in mixed conditions, from 22nd place.
Edoardo made a good start and overtook a number of competitors in front of him. However, as the race went on Edoardo reported an increasing handling problem, he stopped so he wouldn’t carry on risking a major mistake and therefore was forced to retire.
The 19 year-old former karting driver said: “This was a difficult time for us, but it was not without its positive elements. Unfortunately, the format of the weekend means that if you get off to a bad start, it becomes extremely difficult to recover. It was tricky for me to establish the correct set-up- even if the free practice sessions were quite encouraging- which was probably down to inexperience, and from then on we were on the back foot. I am obviously disappointed but I’ve learned a lot and I’m confident that this won’t happen again. The important thing now is to put this weekend behind us, and concentrate on getting back onto the podium in our next race.”
Edoardo’s next outing will be at Imola from May 20-21, for the fifth and sixth races of the Italian Formula Renault Championship. The Prema Powerteam driver is currently second in the title race, and confident of another top result on home territory.
