MORTARA MAINTAINS SECOND IN CHAMPIONSHIP AFTER EVENTFUL VALLELUNGA
French-Italian driver Edoardo Mortara has finished the fourth race of the Italian Formula Renault Championship at Vallelunga with some useful experience under his belt after a weekend of mixed fortunes.
During qualifying on Saturday he was third, missing out on the second spot by just 0.02 seconds. In the first race he finished fourth, following on from his debut podium
at the opening round in Mugello two weeks ago.
The grid for race two in the Italian Formula Renault Championship was formed in order of fastest lap in race one. Some drivers who did not figure prominently in the opening race put on new tyres with the aim of catapulting themselves up the grid on Sunday. As a result, Edoardo started from 17th place.
The Prema Power team driver got off to an excellent start, making up three places before the first corner. Unfortunately, he had to back off a few laps later in order to avoid being taken out by a group of cars that were fighting for position in front of him. This dropped him back to 20th place, but he showed tremendous determination to overtake seven cars and work his way back up to 13th. Luck was not with Edoardo on this occasion: on the last lap he could not avoid hitting a car that had spun in front of him and he was forced to retire.
The 19 year-old said: “This was a messy race, but it certainly was not without its positive sides. I was forced to overtake lots of cars: some of them twice! The most important thing for me at this stage in my career is to learn, and I certainly learnt more in this race than I would have done if I had simply been lucky enough to lead from the front. There was no way I could avoid the collision at the end, but at least it was on the very last lap so I had as much time in the car as possible. My championship situation is still good, so overall I would say this was a very valuable weekend for me and the Prema Power team – even if it was not the luckiest one!”
Edoardo currently maintains second place overall in the Italian Formula Renault Championship. His next outing in the car will be on Thursday 13 April, in a Formula Renault Euroseries test at Zolder. The Euroseries race there takes place from April 29-30.
