CARBONE ON PODIUM IN JAPAN! Photo NewsThree Bond driver Fabio Carbone, backed by Quadra Sports, has finished on the podium at only the second Japanese Formula 3 race of the season. The Brazilian was third after the dramatic race at the Fuji circuit that was shortened because of heavy rain. Earlier in the weekend, Fabio finished a disappointed 13th in the first race of the year. However, this result did not reflect his true potential. Having started near the back of the grid after set-up problems in qualifying, Fabio scythed his way to fourth before being taken out by another competitor. He eventually got back on track to trail home to the finish. But the second race of the season provided a much more indicative showing of Fabio’s capabilities. The race, held in the shadow of Mount Fuji, got underway behind the safety car following a 40-minute delay due to the rain. Once the safety car came in after about three laps, Fabio began to carve his way through the field. The 25 year-old’s charge was the talking point of the race, resulting in a podium finish. Conditions were so bad that Fabio even had to back off on the straight, but he still managed to set the second-fastest lap of the race. “I’m absolutely delighted, particularly as these were the worst conditions I have ever driven in,” said Fabio. “The team did an absolutely fantastic job, enabling me to pull off some good overtaking manoeuvres and finish on the podium. The first race did not go so well for us, so I think it says a lot about the strength and determination of our team that we managed to stay focussed and achieve this result. I’ve really enjoyed driving at Fuji, and I’m looking forward to the next round at Suzuka. We’ve had a good start to the season and now we need to try to capitalise upon it.” Carbone will test his Three Bond Tomei-Nissan for one day on April 14 before the third and fourth rounds of the championship.
