MORTARA , ANOTHER PODIUM IN SECOND F.RENAULT ITALIA RACE AT MUGELLO
French-Italian driver Edoardo Mortara has taken third place in his second Formula Renault Italia race with the Prema Power team. Mortara started third on the grid by virtue of setting third-fastest lap in yesterday’s race – where he finished second on his debut.
In today’s race Edoardo was soon up to second, where he enjoyed a fantastic wheel-to-wheel battle to gain a position after the start. For few laps he managed to close in on the leader, but then he found he had to defend his place vigorously. In the end, Edoardo finished third after a relentless duel that was the highlight of the race. The result marked the end of a perfect debut weekend for the former karting champion, with two podium finishes in his first two races. He now occupies second place in the championship.
The 19 year-old said: “It doesn’t get much better than this! To have two podium finishes in my first two races is an excellent achievement, for which I would truly like to thank the Prema Power team. Today’s race was really exciting, as I was in a wheel-to-wheel battle for most of the race, which taught me so much about racecraft and I am happy that I didn’t make any mistakes. It’s been a perfect start, but I’m not going to let that distract me as there is a very long season ahead.”
Mugello was the first meeting of eight in the Italian Formula Renault Championship, which puts together a high-quality field of more than 30 competitors in identical 2-litre single-seater cars. Edoardo’s next race is at the Italian circuit of Vallelunga from April 8-9.
