MORTARA TAKES SECOND IN F.RENAULT ITALIA DEBUT AT MUGELLO Photo NewsFrench-Italian driver Edoardo Mortara has taken a fantastic second place in his very first Formula Renault Italia race with the Prema Power team. Mortara qualified third- 1.48.664- but made up a place during the course of the race, to get his campaign off to a perfect start this year. The opening round of the championship took place at the famous Mugello circuit, just north of Florence in Italy. Mortara was consistently one of the quickest runners throughout free practice yesterday and qualifying, before converting his potential into a brilliant race drive. After a strong start he grabbed second place at the first corner and was able to control his pace to the finish and his first podium. The 19 year-old commented: “It was raining yesterday, so I had a good chance to get to grips with the car in a wide variety of conditions. For qualifying I found a good set-up that enabled me to push as hard as possible, although actually I was not taking any risks. I got off to a good start and adopted the same strategy in the race. It seemed to work well and I really enjoyed myself. I’d like to thank the Prema Power team for preparing such an excellent car for me, but of course there is more work to do tomorrow! That is another race entirely and we have it all to do all over again. The key thing is to maintain my concentration and my focus.” Mortara’s best lap of 1m49s.391 means that he will start third in tomorrow’s race, as the grid is formed in order of fastest lap from race one. Mugello is the first meeting of eight in the Italian Formula Renault Championship, which puts together a high-quality field of 37 competitors in identical 2-litre single-seater cars. Mugello, 25/03/06
