MORTARA FLIES IN MISANO TESTING Photo NewsFrench-Italian driver Edoardo Mortara has proved his pace at the European Formula Renault test held in Misano, Italy, setting second-fastest time during the afternoon session of the opening day. The Prema Power team driver was consistently in the top three throughout the first day, despite heavy rain that made conditions extremely difficult. The rain masked an engine problem that affected Mortara’s car throughout the test, but he remained focused and completed the test program that was scheduled. On the second day of the test – which was drier – the problem became progressively worse, and Mortara’s session was ended by an engine failure. Nonetheless, he covered 183 laps over the two days and accumulated a lot of useful data. He set competitive times without using his full allocation of new tyres, as the engine problem prevented him from targeting fastest time overall. The tight competition within the championship was underlined by the fact that there were 23 cars all within one second on the final day. “Despite our problems, I’m generally very happy with the way things went,” said Mortara. The 19 year-old added: “Although the engine problem was far from ideal, it was encouraging to see that we could set competitive times even with this handicap. The basic set-up of the car is very good, and I feel confident heading into my first race. We experienced a wide variety of conditions, so I am convinced that we can be fast under more or less any circumstances. There has been a lot of work behind the scenes to make sure we are as well-prepared as possible: now it is up to me to take advantage of it.” Mortara’s first race of the year will be the Formula Renault Italia meeting at Mugello from March 25-26. He will then take part in a Formula Renault Euroseries test at the Nurburgring from March 30-31. The Euroseries Championship gets underway at Zolder from April 29-30.
