MORTARA WINS QUALIFICATION RACE AND CLAIMS POLE IN MACAU
Signature team driver Edoardo Mortara has won the qualification race for the Macau Grand Prix and will consequently line up first on the grid for the main race tomorrow.
The French-Italian driver started today’s race from third in his Dallara-Volkswagen, having been quickest in all the free practice sessions.
After making an excellent start, Mortara chased down the leaders and eventually made his move under braking for the tricky Lisboa corner on lap seven. Once in front, he was easily able to pull clear of the following pack and controlled the rest of the race. He eased off in the closing laps and took the chequered flag just over a second ahead of his nearest rival. Mortara’s win marked Volkswagen’s first Formula 3 victory at Macau since Michael Schumacher won the race in 1990.
“I am really happy for this victory but today is just the qualification race,” said the Signature team driver. “My start was a little better than the others so I could take the slipstream of my rivals in the first straight. I was careful in the first corner but I still nearly hit the wall because the track was so slippery. I was still careful in the first laps and pushed from lap three. Once I was ahead and created a gap it was not so important to push so I controlled the race.”
Mortara, the Vice-Champion in this year’s Formula 3 Euroseries, is now looking forward to the main race tomorrow, which has been won in the past by some of the greatest names in the sport. Having secured the all-important pole position, the 21-year-old is aiming for a clean and trouble-free run tomorrow at the 55th Macau Grand Prix.
“A lot will depend on the start,” he concluded. “If I can get another good start, then we are obviously in good shape for the race – so I will be concentrating hard on that. However, Macau is always one of the most unpredictable events of the year. Pretty much anything can happen and there are some very quick people around me. I’d like to thank Signature and Volkswagen for doing another outstanding job: now we look forward to tomorrow!”
The 55th Macau Grand Prix gets underway tomorrow at 15:30 (local time) and takes in 15 laps of the tight and twisty street circuit.
