MORTARA THIRD ON THE GRID FOR MACAU GRAND PRIX
 Signature team driver Edoardo Mortara, powered by Volkswagen, will line up third on the grid for the prestigious Macau Formula 3 Grand Prix tomorrow.
Having topped the time sheets by going quickest in each of the practice sessions and claiming provisional pole in first qualifying, Mortara found his best lap during second qualifying today hampered by a red flag that briefly stopped the session. Nonetheless, the 21-year-old is pleased to be starting from the second row of the grid, from which he will be aiming to push hard in the big race tomorrow.
Mortara, the Vice-Champion in this year’s Formula 3 Euroseries, excels on street circuits as his victory at Pau earlier in the season proved. With third place on the grid in Macau, he will start from the same grippy side of the track as the pole-sitter and he plans to do everything possible to maximise his chances when the lights go to green.
“Actually, it was a pity we were not further up the grid as we definitely had the pace for pole,” said the French-Italian driver. “We were right on course for it until the red flags came out, and we also had two quick laps interrupted by yellow flags earlier. But I’m not complaining: this is just a part of racing, and both Signature and Volkswagen have done a fantastic job to get us this high up the starting order in such a competitive race. We’ve been quick from the very start here, and now we are aiming to carry that momentum through to the race.”
The street circuit of Macau is a legendary venue that unites all the top Formula 3 drivers from across the world, as they compete to win a race that has been claimed in the past by stars such as Michael Schumacher (the winner in 1990) and Takuma Sato (the winner in 2001). Corners such as Mandarin, famed throughout the world, test a driver’s abilities to the utmost. A total of 30 drivers are expected to take the start.
Together with the Signature team, which has won the Macau Grand Prix in the past, Edoardo gradually tweaked the set-up of his Dallara-Volkswagen during the two free practice sessions yesterday. He is now feeling upbeat heading into the second Macau race of his career, following a promising debut last year.
“I love this track and my past experience here has taught me a lot,” added Edoardo, who is the highest-placed Volkswagen driver on the grid. “This is a race where anything can happen though. We need to make an assertive start tomorrow, stay out of trouble, and then hopefully that will be enough to secure us a good result. So far we’ve not had the slightest problem and the car has felt really good, so I have every confidence in Signature and Volkswagen to give us the equipment we need.”
