MORTARA READY FOR MACAU WITH SIGNATURE AND VOLKSWAGEN Photo NewsEdoardo Mortara, who was recently crowned Vice Champion in the Formula 3 Euroseries, will return to the streets of Macau with the Volkswagen-powered Signature team this weekend, for the Formula 3 Grand Prix on November 16.

Last year Edoardo stunned onlookers by carving through the field to make up 16 places in the main race, following a first-corner off in the qualification race. This year Edoardo aims to show the same speed, but with no mistakes throughout the weekend.

The street circuit of Macau is a legendary venue that unites all the world’s top Formula 3 drivers, as they compete to win a race that has been claimed in the past by stars such as Ayrton Senna, who won in 1983, Michael Schumacher, (who triumphed in 1990) and Takuma Sato, the winner in 2001.

“For every driver in Formula 3, Macau is the place to be – you dream about it all year,” said Edoardo. “A lot of the biggest names in the sport have won this race, but it is also extremely unpredictable. There are a lot of cars fighting for position on a tight and demanding track, so anything can happen. The key, as always, is to avoid mistakes and start towards the front. Luckily, I can count on the support of Signature and Volkswagen, who have both done a perfect job throughout the year. I’m confident we will have a competitive package again this weekend.”

Macau will bring to a close an excellent 2008 season for the French-Italian, which saw him finish second overall in the Formula 3 Euroseries thanks to a spectacular win at Pau – another street circuit – and five podiums. This was achieved in only the first full season for Volkswagen’s new Formula 3 engine.

However, Edoardo will need to call upon all his car control skills this weekend. The narrow and bumpy Macau circuit contains some of the most challenging corners in world motorsport, characterised by constantly changing levels of grip and uncompromising crash barriers. In total, 30 drivers will take the start after two qualifying sessions, making it one of the most prestigious events of the year, where dealing with traffic is an essential skill. On this very specialised circuit, Edoardo will benefit greatly from the renowned expertise of the Signature team, which won at Macau in 2003 with Le Mans Series star Nicolas Lapierre.

Philippe Sinault, the team principal of Signature – which will once more run three cars in Macau this year – commented: “From our experience of Macau last year, and other street circuits such as Pau this year, we know that this track should be well-suited to Edoardo. We aim to give him the equipment to get the job done, and rely on his ample talent to do the rest.”
