MORTARA TO TEST GP2 AT JEREZ
Edoardo Mortara is to sample a GP2 car at a test in Jerez for the first time this week. The French-Italian, who has just become this year’s Formula 3 Euroseries vice-champion, will try out the Trident Racing GP2 car on Wednesday October 29 and a similar car run by Arden on Thursday October 30. After an impressive season, in which the Volkswagen-powered driver led the F3 Euroseries for more than half the year before finishing a strong second, Mortara is currently evaluating his options for 2009.
“I’m very much looking forward to having the chance to test a GP2 car, which will be a brand new experience for me,” said the 21-year-old. “I’d like to thank Volkswagen for giving me permission to do the test, which is very much appreciated along with all the rest of their support throughout the season. At the moment I am assessing different options for 2009, and I hope that this new experience of different cars and teams in Jerez will give me some useful knowledge for the future.”
Trident Racing, based in Northern Italy, was founded in 2006 specifically to compete in the GP2 championship, which features 600 horsepower cars that are a stepping-stone to Formula 1. Arden made the move to GP2 in 2005, having previously won two F3000 championships. The Jerez circuit, opened in 1985, is a 4.4 kilometre track located in the south of Spain that contains several technical corners as well as some fast sections, making it a popular Formula 1 testing venue. It also hosted seven Formula 1 races between 1986 and 1997.
Edoardo’s next race will be the famous Macau F3 Grand Prix, in his regular Dallara F308 Volkswagen of Team Signature Plus , which takes place from November 15-16 on the other side of the world. After a season that has already surpassed expectations, Edoardo and Volkswagen will be looking to end the year on a high at Formula 3’s most prestigious race meeting.
