MORTARA FINISHES 2008 FORMULA 3 EUROSERIES AS VICE CHAMPION
 French-Italian driver Edoardo Mortara has finished the 2008 Formula 3 Euroseries season as vice-champion, having led the title race for the first half of the season.
The Signature team driver claimed the F3 Euroseries rookie title last year, and in 2008 he was never out of the top two in the rankings. Using Volkswagen’s all-new Formula 3 engine, Edoardo took a memorable win on the streets of Pau this year and claimed five podium finishes.
With the right balance of speed, consistency and determination, Edoardo has finished the year as the highest-placed Volkswagen driver and marked himself out as a real star of the future. Other drivers to have finished in the top three of the Formula 3 Euroseries recently include Lewis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel and Adrian Sutil.
“The season has gone beyond all our expectations,” said Edoardo. “Having started the year with a brand new car and a brand new engine, I don’t think that anybody would have predicted a result like this at the end. That we’ve done it is an extraordinary testament to the Signature team and especially to Volkswagen, who have come up with an amazing engine in only their first full season. In terms of both performance and reliability it has been exemplary. I’d like to thank everybody who has worked hard to make this great result possible: it’s not been easy but it has certainly been worth it. In this Olympic year, I’m very proud to have my own silver medal!”
The 10th and final race meeting of the Formula 3 Euroseries took place at the Hockenheim circuit in Germany: a venue for the German Grand Prix and a huge technical challenge thanks to a layout that combines flat-out straights with a tight and twisty stadium section.
Coming into the event Edoardo had it all to do, as while a solid result would guarantee the series runner-up spot, any retirement could have dropped him down to fifth in the overall rankings.
The French-Italian soaked up the pressure admirably to qualify his Dallara-Volkswagen third on Friday, although he felt that he could have improved his time further. He made a good start in Saturday’s race one, but unfortunately was hit with a drive-through penalty as the result of crossing one of the track markings. He consequently finished the race 13th, which meant that he would start race two on Sunday in the same position on the grid.
Despite big pressure, Edoardo turned in one of the drives that he has become well-known for. Without taking risks he sliced his way through the field to finish sixth and score the necessary points to become vice-champion.
“On Sunday, it was just a question of bringing the car home safely,” he said. “There was a bit of stress, but we knew what we had to do so we just concentrated hard and got on with the job.”
Edoardo’s next outing will be at the Macau Formula 3 Grand Prix from November 15-16.
