MORTARA UNLUCKY IN BARCELONA
 Signature team driver Edoardo Mortara had an unlucky weekend at Barcelona, round eight of the Formula 3 Euroseries. Nonetheless, the Volkswagen-powered driver retains second place overall in the championship and is determined to have a strong finish to the season in the two race meetings that remain.
The Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona is renowned as a highly-technical track, which is why it is also a popular venue for Formula 1 testing. However, the Formula 3 Euroseries used only Barcelona’s short circuit, which resulted in all the cars being extremely close together. Conditions remained dry and warm throughout the weekend.
Spain’s round of the F3 Euroseries started off with a group test, in which Edoardo set 10th quickest overall. Nevertheless, he was not able to improve on his pace in qualifying and only emerged with 15th: albeit less than sixth-tenths of a second off pole.
He got off to a good start in Saturday’s race one and battled hard to make up six places and finish ninth at the chequered flag. Unfortunately this is one of the very worst places to end up under the rules of the F3 Euroseries, as only the top eight finishers are reversed to form the grid for race two. So the French-Italian just missed out on pole position and knew he had it all to do again in race two on Sunday.
As usual Edoardo was undeterred and set about his task with enthusiasm. He made another lightning start, overtaking several cars to climb to fourth. His excellent race was curtailed when a fellow competitor drove into Edoardo whilst clumsily attempting to get past. The resulting impact damaged the Signature car’s suspension and Edoardo was forced to retire.
Despite not finishing the race, the 21 year-old retains second place in the closely-fought F3 Euroseries and is determined to fight to the very end throughout the four races that remain.
“What happened in race two was a real pity and in no way my fault,” said Edoardo. “I just felt an impact and that was it. I think we had the pace to finish on the podium, so who knows what might have happened if we could have finished eighth in the first race and had pole position? Still, there is no point in looking backwards and I am only thinking of the future. Once more, Signature and Volkswagen did a great job to give us the best possible chance and I am sure that will be the case again in the final two race meetings at Le Mans and Hockenheim. There’s certainly no reason to give up: and that’s not in my nature anyway: I’m going to keep pushing as hard as I can for as long as I have a mathematical chance of the title.”
The penultimate round of the F3 Euroseries will take place at Le Mans in France from October 4-5. Edoardo currently trails the championship leader by 24 points, with 40 points still up for grabs.
