INTERVIEW WITH EDOARDO MORTARA So, how does it feel to win the F3 Euroseries rookie championship?

“To be completely honest, it isn’t something that has sunk in yet. To accomplish this in our first year of such a competitive championship is obviously a dream for me. I’m hoping that this will boost my future career prospects, as it’s a very well-recognised championship: if you look back at the names of some of the people who have won it in the past then it is really quite amazing.”

How competitive was the Signature team this year?

“Their professionalism and hard work is one of the main reasons why we were able to win the championship. I am very grateful for all their efforts. It did not take me long to fit into the team at all: they were very welcoming, and it was also a good opportunity for me to race against some very competitive team mates.”

Who were the other major influences on you this year?

“I’m very grateful for the support of my family and my key sponsors, Energy Holding, Chopard, De Grisogono and Sonnig. Without them it would not have been possible. I’m also very grateful for the support of Quadra Sports, my management company, that has helped me with physical and psychological training, marketing and racecraft. Thanks to all these people, I’m definitely a stronger character at the end of this year than I was at the start of the year.”

What was the highlight of your year?

“Actually, there were three. The first one was winning at Brands Hatch, in only the second meeting of the year. Then there was winning race one at Barcelona in September. I felt very comfortable in the car and I also think that I am the first rookie to achieve this since the current race format was started, which is a fantastic record. The third highlight was obviously winning the rookie championship in race two at Hockenheim. It was a great race, where we were battling for the lead, and to come away with the championship as well was fantastic.”

You’re down to race at the Macau F3 Grand Prix. What do you think that will be like?

“It’s a fantastic opportunity for me and I’m very excited about it. It’s the perfect way to end the year, as it’s the most prestigious Formula 3 race in the world. I don’t know much about the circuit and it’s bound to be a massive challenge for me but I’m going to do my best. I like street circuits, and I think that this one should suit me.”

What are your plans for 2008?

“They are not finalised yet as 2007 is not even over! Maybe I’ll do the F3 Euroseries again, which is quite a likely option, or possibly something else. It’s a question of seeing what is the best offer that comes along, to help me in the long term…”
