MORTARA STARS AT FORMULA 3 MASTERS IN ZOLDER
 Signature Team driver Edoardo Mortara has starred at the most prestigious Formula 3 race of the year: the Formula 3 Masters at Zolder. This race attracts the best drivers in Formula 3 from all across the world, and it has been won in the past by drivers of the calibre of Lewis Hamilton. At the end of a tightly-fought competition, Edoardo finished sixth: a brilliant rookie performance.
Once again Zolder was another new experience for Edoardo as the French-Italian driver is only in his second year of racing cars. His usual focus is the Formula 3 Euroseries, where he has already claimed a race victory this year, but part of his programme was also the Formula 3 Masters for the first time.
“I really didn’t know quite what to expect before coming to the Masters – apart from the fact that it was sure to be the toughest and most competitive race of my career so far,” said Edoardo. “It’s enough to look at the list of people who have won this race in the past to know what the challenge was going to be like.”
During free practice Edoardo concentrated on learning the circuit, but he was still fifth straight away after the first session – underlining his potential at the complex Belgian circuit in temperatures that exceeded 25 degrees centigrade.
Due to the large number of competitors – 36 in total – qualifying was split into two groups, with the top 10 in each group going through to a super pole session. Edoardo’s firm objective was to get through to the group that had a shot at pole. He succeeded brilliantly, but his quickest lap was interrupted by a red flag that stopped the session. Had the lap continued, his telemetry predicted fourth position overall. As it was, he was forced to settle for ninth: still a good result in his first Masters.
Race day saw very hot temperatures of over 30 degrees centigrade. Edoardo made a brilliant start and was soon up to fifth overall. However, he had to back off at the chicane after braking too late and slid back to ninth. Zolder is not an easy circuit to overtake on, but Edoardo did an excellent job to fight his way back up to an impressive sixth overall at the finish.
Edoardo commented: “It was a great weekend and I am really pleased, but also a bit frustrated as well, because without the red flags we could have been higher up the grid in qualifying. I’d like to thank the team for giving me an extremely competitive car, and I look forward to resuming our campaign and putting into practice all the lessons I have learned recently when the F3 Euroseries starts again in September.”
Edoardo’s next race will be at the Nurburgring in Germany from September 1-2.
