CARBONE ON PODIUM AT SUGO
Up and coming Brazilian Fabio Carbone has finished on the podium at Sugo, round five of the Japanese Super GT Championship.
The Nakajima Racing driver is now back in the hunt for the title, having enjoyed an excellent weekend at the wheel of the Honda NSX.
His potential was underlined during free practice, when the times for the car he shares with Frenchman Loic Duval were good enough to place the crew in contention for the top grid positions. After an exciting qualifying session, the duo ended up third on the grid.
The weekend was about to get a lot more difficult though, as heavy rain started to fall just as the race was about to get underway. Conditions were so tricky that the race was started behind the safety car, with Duval driving to begin with.
By the time he handed over to Fabio, their Honda was fourth. But with the track beginning to dry out rapidly, Fabio felt that it was time to move onto slicks. The Brazilian made best use of the drying line to set a number of impressive lap times, eventually closing to within just three seconds of the leader.
However, Fabio’s charge was hindered by having to lap slower cars, and in the end he finished third – making a welcome return to the podium.
Fabio said: “I’m actually very pleased with the way everything went: it’s a good feeling to be back on the podium, and even better to know that we have the speed to be in genuine contention for wins again. I’d like to thank the team for another excellent job. For our next race, the Suzuka 1000kms, we will carry 20 kilograms of success ballast, but I still think we stand a very good chance as this is not a big handicap. Things are looking good!”
The Suzuka race, round six of the Japanese Super GT Championship takes place from August 18-19.
