RAGUES SHOWS HIS SPEED AT ANDERSTORP Photo NewsEuronova driver Pierre Ragues has showed his speed at the Swedish circuit of Anderstorp, equalling his best result of fifth in the highly-competitive Formula Master Championship. Round five of the series took place at Anderstorp, which hosted the Swedish Grand Prix in the early 1970s. For Pierre, it was yet another brand new circuit – but he quickly got to grips with the demands of this quite specific circuit. An extra challenge was the intermittent wet and dry weather, making parts of the circuit almost undriveable. The rain was so bad that the race director had no choice but to cancel the first free practice session on Friday. When the action resumed, Pierre built up his speed and found himself growing in confidence after trying different tyres and set-ups. The reward for all his hard work was an excellent third quickest time, which gave him high hopes for the qualifying session. Despite the tricky conditions, with more rain, Pierre set an excellent sixth-fastest time. Unfortunately, this became 10th as his last two quick laps were cancelled as yellow flags were being shown at time. Nonetheless, Pierre was convinced that he could still obtain a good finish in race one. After a quick and stylish drive he finished fifth overall, equally his best ever result in the brand new Formula. The result also meant that he would start race two from fourth on the grid: his best starting position of the year. The 23 year-old made a fantastic start, slotting into second from the very beginning – despite the fact that conditions were so tricky a 12-minute safety car period followed. Pierre was on course for his first podium, but his hopes were cruelly ended when he was forced off the track by an over-optimistic move from another competitor. Pierre commented: “The way that race two ended was extremely disappointing, as we were heading for the podium and my feeling with the car was good, despite the really tricky conditions. But I cannot be too upset about the weekend: in race one I matched my best result, and more importantly we showed we had the speed to run at the front. I still don’t have a lot of experience, so it was a very good experience to be a genuine contender for the podium.” Pierre will be in action again at the next round of the Formula Master series in Oschersleben, Germany, from August 25-26.
