CARBONE DENIED A CHANCE TO SHINE IN SEPANG
Fabio Carbone was denied a chance to show his class in Sepang last weekend, after a series of incidents compromised the fourth round of the Japanese Super GT Championship for the Brazilian driver and his French team mate Loic Duval.
With a second-fastest time during Friday’s free practice, Carbone and Duval again demonstrated the sort of pace that had seen them lying second overall in the series earlier this year. But when it came to the crucial qualifying lap, Duval unfortunately had a spin – which dropped the Nakajima Racing duo down to ninth on the grid.
Even so, Fabio hoped that he and Loic could move up through the field, using raw pace and a clever pit stop strategy. However, their chances were virtually over before they had begun: on the final corner of lap one Loic picked up a puncture following some contact with another competitor and had to return to the pits.
The incident cost their Honda NSX an entire lap, and when Fabio took over the car he had no chance of finishing anywhere near the points.
Fabio said: “In motor racing you have good times and bad times: these are some of the bad times! It was a very demoralising race, as there was absolutely nothing I could do about what happened. On the positive side, we were able to test a few things on the car, and we look forward now to the next race at Sugo. There, at least we will have no success ballast – so we have every opportunity of doing well.”
The Sugo race, round five of the Japanese Super GT Championship takes place from July 28-29, but Fabio will also be racing before then when he takes part in the latest round of the Formula Nippon Championship.
