MORTARA LEARNS TOUGH LESSONS FROM THE NORISRING
 Following a fantastic podium in the opening race at the Norisring, Signature’s Edoardo Mortara ended race two with a spectacular accident while in contention for another podium place in the Formula 3 Euroseries. Nonetheless, he maintains the lead of the rookie championship and fourth place in the overall series.
Starting from sixth place on the grid in race two, the French-Italian soon worked his way up to fourth – in only his sixth Formula 3 race. He was in touch with third-placed Kamui Kobayashi, but was also trying to defend his position from Oliver Jakes in fifth.
Jakes tried to get a run on Edoardo before the hairpin – notorious for tricky overtaking – but just like two drivers the day before, Edoardo made the mistake of not backing off and taking to the grass. He then lost control of the Dallara-Mercedes, skating across the track and hitting Kobayashi. Both drivers retired uninjured.
Edoardo said: “I can only apologise unreservedly to Kamui and his team. It was my mistake, I should have waited and regain my position probably the lap after , with the benefit of more experience I would have let Jakes go rather than tried to defend my position on the grass. In Formula Renault I may have got away with it, but this was not the case here – and the learning experience is always tough. At times like this, you find out just how difficult it is, This is probably the most disappointing moment of my career, yet the important thing is that nobody was harmed. I have learned my lesson from this experience, and now I aim to put this incident behind me and start the next Formula 3 Euroseries round in Magny-Cours, France, next weekend with a renewed focus. It is a long way to go: the car felt really fantastic, so we have every possibility of doing well and I want to reward my team at the earliest opportunity.”
