MORTARA ON PODIUM AT THE NORISRING
Signature team driver Edoardo Mortara has finished the opening race of round three of the Formula 3 Euroseries in third place, hot on the heels of his maiden win two weeks ago.
The excellent result meant that he moved to third overall in the championship, and increased his advantage in the lead of the rookie championship.
Round three of the Formula 3 Euroseries took place at the Norisring in Germany: a demanding circuit also used by the prestigious DTM championship. Uncertain weather made the tricky conditions even more difficult to judge.
Edoardo set fifth-fastest time in qualifying, but a yellow flag penalty- dropped 5 grid position- incurred during the previous race at Brands Hatch (which he won) meant that he took the start from 10th place in Germany.
The French-Italian driver made a cautious start to the race on what is renowned as a demanding circuit. Having defended his place into the notorious first corner, Edoardo began to move up the field. Thanks to a series of stylish overtaking manoeuvres, he climbed as high as seventh overall before it began to rain heavily.
Eventually, the rain was falling so hard that the organisers were left with no choice but to stop the race until conditions became a little better permitting the teams to change tyres too. At the re-start Edoardo carried on where he had left off, this time on wet tyres. Despite the pressure of an extremely slippery track, he made no mistakes at all to reach the podium for the second consecutive time – in only his fifth Formula 3 race.
He commented: “The dry and wet conditions made the race extremely difficult, and we had no idea what was going to happen. I tried not to think about it too much and just concentrated on driving my own race. Then, at the re-start, we had to do it all over again. I’m very pleased to be on the podium again, and even happier to be third in the overall championship at this early stage. There is a long way to go though and we must stay concentrated on the job in hand – both tomorrow and in the future. Another time I would like to thank my team for a good and solid job.”
The second Formula 3 Euroseries race at the Norisring takes place tomorrow, and Edoardo’s result today means that he will start from P 6 on the grid with the reverse grid system.
