FRUSTRATING WEEKEND FOR PIERRE AT BRNO
 Frenchman Pierre Ragues endured a frustrating weekend at Brno in the Czech Republic, for round three of the Formula Master Championship.
Pierre is currently the only Frenchman taking part in the all-new Championship, which is backed by Eurosport and follows eight meetings of the World Touring Car series this year.
Brno, one of the most famous circuits in eastern Europe, started off well for Pierre as he claimed fifth-fastest time in free practice. During qualifying, however, he was hit by bad luck. The 23 year-old was caught in traffic during his hot laps on the all-important second set of tyres – meaning that he could do no better than 16th on the grid for race one.
When the lights turned green, he made a good start and overtook two cars to climb to 14th. However, he then noticed that the handling of the car was increasingly unpredictable as the race went on. With both understeer and oversteer, he could not defend his place effectively and dropped back to 18th. After the race, his Euronova team traced the problem back to a malfunctioning anti-roll bar.
Race two promised better as with a car once more at 100%, Pierre was fourth-quickest in the warm-up. He still faced a tough task starting from 18th place but Pierre refused to be discouraged and set about making his way up the field. He pushed hard to overtake four cars and reach 14th, but while overtaking another competitor he ran wide and spun, dropping down to 25th. Over the remaining laps he managed to get back to an unhappy 18th – the position from which he had started.
Pierre commented: “After a fantastic race in Pau two weeks ago, this was a really disappointing weekend. In practice and warm-up we clearly had the pace, but the bad luck of encountering traffic in qualifying at the worst possible moment compromised both races badly. These things happen though, and in motor racing you have to accept the lows with the highs. Now we will be working on our qualifying technique, but on the positive side I’ve had more valuable time in the car and we’ve also shown that we can overtake and fight from the back.”
Pierre will be in action again at the next round of the Formula Master series for the first time in the streets of Porto in Portugal, from 6-8 July.
