CARBONE MOVES UP TO SECOND IN SUPER GT CHAMPIONSHIP
 Brazilian driver Fabio Carbone has moved up to second in the prestigious Japanese Super GT Championship, following the second race of the season at Okayama last weekend.
Having claimed a podium at the opening race in Suzuka just under a month ago, the Nakajima Racing driver deliberately chose a tactical strategy to finish fourth in Okayama and boost his championship prospects.
The Japanese Super GT Championship involves high-powered machinery and close teamwork, with two drivers sharing a car for each race. As usual, Fabio shared his Honda NSX with the experienced Frenchman Loic Duval. This time again, it was Loic’s turn to qualify the car and he ran with no problems to claim fourth on the grid – an excellent achievement given that the car was carrying 25 kilograms worth of success ballast (on account of Fabio’s recent podium) as per the regulations.
After a solid start to the weekend, Fabio and Loic decided to take no risks whatsoever in order to maximise their championship chances, and their car enjoyed a trouble-free race to fourth overall – just in sight of the podium.
Fabio said: “We knew what we needed to do coming into this weekend and thankfully we had every opportunity to stick with that plan. It was a race weekend that was pretty free of drama for us – which is normally a good thing! I’d like to thank the Nakajima team for their constant professionalism: once more they gave us a very good car. It’s never easy driving with success ballast on board, but on the whole we were able to get round the problem. The result is that we are now second in the championship – an excellent result – with a very good chance of moving further up the points table if we stay properly concentrated.”
The next round of the Japanese Super GT Championship takes place from 5th & 6th May on the prestigious and F1 Fuji circuit, but Fabio will be back in action before then when he once more swaps his Honda GT car for a Formula Nippon single-seater. The second round of the Formula Nippon Championship, where Fabio is driving for Dandelion Racing, takes place this weekend at Suzuka: one of Fabio’s favourite circuits.
