MORTARA MOVES UP TO FORMULA 3
French-Italian driver Edoardo Mortara has concluded a deal with the France-based Signature team to drive in the Formula 3 Euroseries next year plus the prestigious Marlboro Masters Grand Prix at Zandvoort.
The 20 year-old former karting star graduated to his first season in cars last year, when he competed on the Formula Renault Eurocup and the Italian Formula Renault Championship. He finished top rookie with fourth overall in the Italian series and scored his first points in the Eurocup during an excellent debut year.
Mortara has now decided to step up to the even greater challenge of the Formula 3 Euroseries, which will test his speed and commitment to the maximum. The series was founded in its current format in 2003, and has since produced a number of Formula 1 stars, such as Nico Rosberg, Robert Kubica, Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton. The championship boasts a truly multi-national entry list, with approximately 12 to 15 countries regularly represented. It also attracts the best junior single-seater teams from European countries that include France, Germany, Britain, Italy and Spain.
Next year’s Formula 3 Euroseries calendar will once again follow the spectacular DTM package. This comprises 20 races in 10 of the most celebrated racing venues in Europe, such as the Nurburgring, Brands Hatch and Barcelona.
The Signature team – a former winner of the well-known Macau Formula 3 Grand Prix – is based at Bourges, in central France, and has many years of experience in this category. In 2007, it will continue to use a Dallara chassis and Mercedes engine.
Edoardo said: “I already tested the car at the end of last year, and straight away I felt at ease with it. Formula 3 is obviously a big step up from Formula Renault in terms of speed and competition, but I believe that I am ready now after learning so much last year. Of course, this season will be a massive challenge for me as I am learning not only an entirely new car but also many new circuits. However, I perform at my best when I have a bit of pressure behind me and I am determined to do everything I can to maximise my opportunities this year. The team’s record speaks for itself, as does the calibre of the championship: it’s enough to look at the number of drivers from the F3 Euroseries who have progressed to Formula 1.”
