CARBONE CONCLUDES FORMULA NIPPON DEAL WITH DANDELION Photo NewsBrazil’s Fabio Carbone has signed a deal to remain in Japan this year, competing in Formula Nippon with Dandelion Racing. Dandelion won the 2004 Formula Nippon Championship with Richard Lyons, and has regularly been one of the front-running teams in this highly competitive series. Fabio’s car for the 2007 season will be a Lola chassis powered by a 3.0 litre Honda V8 that puts out about 550 horsepower. His programme will consist of nine race meetings around some of the most famous circuits in Japan. The 26 year-old Brazilian already has plenty of experience of the tracks, having starred on the Japanese Formula 3 Championship last year. Fabio took two victories, three pole positions and eight podiums with the Threebond team, to finish fourth in the title race. Now Fabio moves onto the new challenge of Formula Nippon – which has been won by Grand Prix stars such as Ralf Schumacher in the past. The Brazilian has one firm aim heading into the season: to challenge for the rookie’s title – designed for those contesting the championship in their first year. Fabio commented: “I enjoy life in Japan, so I am very pleased to be staying for another year. Formula Nippon will be a big challenge, but having already tested the car in the past I am confident that it will be very well suited to me. Dandelion Racing’s reputation speaks for itself, and it’s fantastic to be joining a championship-winning team at the highest level. I know that this year I have to deliver, so my aim is to fight for the rookie’s title above all else and also do my best in the overall championship. However it will not be easy, as I am new to the championship against a number of very experienced drivers. That’s not going to stop me from pushing really hard though!” Fabio’s team mate will be the Swede Bjorn Wirdheim – an ex-Formula 1 tester – and the first Formula Nippon race meeting will be at Fuji from March 31-April 1.
