MORTARA LEARNS FROM A TRICKY FINAL RACE WEEK END
Prema Powerteam driver Edoardo Mortara has learnt a lot from a tricky final race meeting of the season, in the Formula Renault Eurocup at Barcelona.
The Barcelona circuit, in northern Spain, is well known as a test and Grand Prix venue. It contains an interesting mix of corners and speeds, but Edoardo struggled to put together a perfect lap during a packed-out qualifying session. He was 22nd for race one and 19th for race two, after a competitive session where the majority of the field was covered by less than a second!
Things were no easier during the races. The French-Italian went off in race one, while a tyre blister proved disastrous in the second race. Having climbed to 16th, Edoardo could only sit and watch as his tyre degraded. After a pit stop, he limped home to 28th.
The 19 year-old commented: "It¹s obviously not the way I wanted to finish the year, but the raw figures mask our potential here. We were very quick in individual sectors during qualifying but we struggled to hook them together for some reason. If things had gone according to plan, we would definitely have been capable of a place towards the front of the grid. Unfortunately, our grid slot meant that I had to push hard during both races. During race one I overstepped the mark, and during the second race we had the problem with the tyre blistering. Had it not been for that, I think we could have challenged for a points position. This weekend has been a mixture of bad luck and mistakes, but adversity is the biggest test for any driver. I am now going to analyse everything very carefully, in order to make sure that I can profit from our data. The most important thing is to learn as much as possible that was the whole point of this year."
Edoardo’s first year of car racing, after a successful career in karts, has been extremely positive. The Prema Powerteam driver finished as top rookie in the Italian Formula Renault Championship, and he has scored points in the highly-competitive Eurocup twice.
The French-Italian will now concentrate on preparation for 2007. His programme is yet to be decided, but Edoardo is determined to take on board all the lessons learned this year in order to develop his promising pace.
