MORTARA 4TH OVERALL AND 1ST ROOKIE IN ITALIAN F.RENAULT! Photo NewsPrema Powerteam driver Edoardo Mortara has underlined his prodigious pace by finishing this year’s Italian Formula Renault Championship as leading rookie. He also claimed fourth overall in the series – a remarkable achievement for somebody new to racing – with a strong performance at the final round in Monza. Monza needs no introduction, as it is home to the Italian Grand Prix and one of the most legendary circuits in the world. It provides a massive technical challenge, with a number of flat-out straights but also some technical chicanes with punishing kerbs. Like all power circuits, it is a place that Edoardo loves. A trouble-free qualifying session saw him comfortably qualify fifth for race one and fourth for race two. Edoardo’s objective was principally to obtain a solid points-scoring finish, in order to cement fourth place in the championship. However, it nearly all went wrong for him before race one even started. On cold tyres, he spun while making his way to the grid. This meant that he had to start at the very back, but he overtook a number of cars en route to an eventual 16th. Race two was happily much more straightforward for the French-Italian and he ended up fifth, to finish the championship as leading rookie. The former karting champion commented: “What an incredible year this has been! I came straight from karting so I expected to climb a learning curve, but it’s been a really big challenge. I’ve been happy with our speed – which is the most important thing – but I need to be more consistent as well, which will come with experience. I’m delighted to finish the Italian Championship as first rookie, and this is a very solid base that I am sure we can build on next year. Above all I would like to thank the Prema Powerteam, which has worked so hard on my behalf all year. All their efforts have been very much appreciated and I hope that our speed this season has helped to show it.” Although the Italian Formula Renault Championship is over, Edoardo’s season is not quite finished yet. He will now take part in the final Formula Renault Eurocup meeting in Barcelona from October 28-29, aiming to finish the year on another high!
