PROMISING PACE FOR MORTARA AT VARANO
Prema Powerteam driver Edoardo Mortara has demonstrated promising pace at Varano,
round six of the Italian Formula Renault Championship.
The weekend’s action consisted of just one race and qualifying session, on the tight and twisty circuit near the famous Italian city of Parma. Varano is a compact circuit, and its sinuous nature means that overtaking is practically impossible.
The French-Italian driver qualified 11th out of 28 cars: a remarkable performance given that he went off on only the third lap of qualifying after making a small mistake. The 19 year-old bitterly regretted his error though, considering that he would have been able to challenge for a top grid spot had he remained on the circuit. His performances over the 3 free practice sessions showed his speed among the front runners.
When the race got underway, Edoardo made a fantastic start. With a series of impressive overtaking manoeuvres that are unusual within the twisty confines of Varano, he began to make his way up the field with an impressive and very constant pace. Unfortunately, a sudden downpour meant that he did not get the chance to demonstrate his abilities to the full. Edoardo was up to seventh, but the race organisers decided that conditions were becoming too dangerous to continue and put out the red flag with six laps left to go.
The former karting champion commented: "It was a real pity, as had the race continued I think we could have been in the top five at the end. Our race pace was extremely encouraging, but the mistake in qualifying cost us extremely dearly. I’m very sorry for that mistake as we had a fantastic car all weekend: my team did a great job. I intend to learn from this, and I approach the last Italian Formula Renault races of the season determined to aim for a win…"
The next and final round of the Italian Formula Renault Championship takes place at Monza, Italy, from October 6-8. Before then, Edoardo will take part in the sixth and penultimate round of the European Formula Renault series at the Le Mans circuit in France from September 29-October 1. Edoardo is currently fourth in the Italian Formula Renault Championship and first rookie: his aim is to hold onto this position until the end of the season.
