CARBONE IMPRESSES ON NISSAN DEBUT
Brazilian Fabio Carbone, a frontrunner in the All-Japan Formula 3 Championship, had his first taste of the factory Nissan Motul Autech Z at the Suzuka 1000 kilometres last weekend, part of the prestigious Japanese GT Championship.
The 25 year-old was asked to be third driver in the number 22 car, sharing with Richard Lyons and Michael Krumm. As third driver, it was Fabio's task to drive the car in Friday practice and in qualifying on Saturday.
Although the race itself took place in dry and hot weather, Fabio's first run in the car on Friday took place under wet conditions. In the wet weather, he completed five extremely competitive flying laps. On Saturday he helped to qualify the car 10th, despite its 80 kilograms of handicap weight.
During the race, the car climbed up to an eventual second place overall behind the sister Nissan that won the event!
Fabio said: "It was a great honour for me to be given this one-off drive, and I very much hope I can have another opportunity to drive it in the future. The car was very stable and very fast in a wide variety of conditions, as can be seen by the final result. I'd like to thank everybody at Nissan for giving me this chance, during a weekend where I learnt so
much. Having come from a single-seater background, I was impressed with the level of teamwork evident through the driver changes. It was a fantastic weekend, which I will always remember, and I hope that I showed some speed
during my turn to drive the car."
Fabio returns to his customary Formula 3 Dallara run by Threebond this weekend for the 13th and 14th rounds of the Japanese Formula 3 Championship. With eight rounds left to run, his aim is to finish in the top three of the series.
