MORTARA LEARNS FROM CHALLENGING WEEKEND AT MISANO Photo NewsPrema Powerteam driver Edoardo Mortara is well-prepared for his next outing on the Misano circuit, after taking part in the third round of the Formula Renault Eurocup last weekend. Unusually, the fifth round of the Formula Renault Italia series – which Edoardo is also competing on – takes place only a week later on exactly the same circuit. So all the running time accumulated last weekend will stand Edoardo in good stead for this weekend’s race as well. Misano is one of the most technical circuits on the calendar, which is why it is well-known as a testing venue. But Edoardo’s weekend was held back by two seemingly trivial mistakes during Friday practice, which meant that he went off the road and lost valuable time in which to establish a good set-up. When it came to qualifying on Saturday, Edoardo was caught on the back foot and could only qualify in P20 and P19 for races one and two respectively. Nonetheless, the French-Italian former karting champion was confident about his race pace – and his optimism was well-founded. The competition was incredibly close all weekend, as driving standards in the Eurocup have rarely been higher. Throughout first qualifying 26 cars were within the same second, and given his starting position Edoardo did well to finish 20th. Race two was a similar story with Edoardo starting towards the back of the grid but rising to 13th thanks to a combative drive as well as a good car, where he overtook several cars. He eventually finished in 12th place following the post-race disqualification of race winner Dani Clos. The 19 year-old commented: “I deeply regret the two mistakes I made on Friday, which clouded the whole weekend for me. From then on we were constantly playing catch-up, which meant that it was always going to be difficult to get a decent result. We tried to do the best we could under the circumstances and our race pace was actually very good, which makes me regret the problems we had earlier even more. The most important thing is now to concentrate on the positive aspect: we have plenty of experience of the circuit and I think we are in a strong position to do well next weekend. I really can’t wait to be back on track next week end” Edoardo is next in action on the Italian Formula Renault Championship, which also takes place in Misano, from July 22-23.
