CARBONE UPBEAT AFTER SUZUKA Photo NewsThree Bond driver Fabio Carbone has made it his mission to regain second place in the Japanese Formula 3 Championship after a tricky race weekend at Suzuka. A free practice session at the circuit on Friday showed the Brazilian’s promising pace, with fourth-fastest time overall. However conditions for qualifying were very different, meaning that the 25 year-old struggled to find the right set-up due to massive oversteer. After a demanding session, he ended up 10th on the grid for both races. During race one, Fabio put in a spirited performance to overtake several cars and end up sixth overall. He was confident of improving his position further, but a race distance of just 12 laps made it mission impossible. Nonetheless, Fabio still managed to set the second-fastest race lap in extremely hot conditions. The second race was very much an event of two halves. Fabio made a good getaway and seemed set to claim a podium place, having charged his way to fourth. Then it started to rain, and the complexion of the race changed entirely. With his dry tyres, Fabio was unable to maintain his pace. The Brazilian sensibly opted for safety and eventually finished sixth. The 25 year-old commented: “It was a tricky weekend, but not without its positive aspects. We’ve taken points consistently and without our problems in qualifying I think we could have been fighting for our first win of the year – on what is probably the most challenging circuit of the calendar. Once the car was working properly it felt good and again we were able to pull off several overtaking manoeuvres. Unfortunately we have slipped to fourth in the championship now so my objective is to take back second. From what I can see of the performance of the car and the team, I am confident we will be able to do that at the next race weekend….” The All-Japan Formula 3 Championship resumes at the Autopolis circuit with rounds 11 and 12 on August 5-6, after a one-day test at the same venue on August 3.
