MORTARA DENIED FIRST VICTORY AT HOCKENHEIM
 Only a decision from the Italian Formula Renault Championship race stewards at Hockenheim denied Prema Powerteam driver Edoardo Mortara a well-deserved first victory at the fifth round of the series.
Mortara lined up 13th on the grid after spinning during the wet qualifying session. But in the race he charged to first on a drying track, which is also used for Formula 1, in order to seal a resounding victory. However, the race stewards judged that a tyre change for Edoardo from wets to slicks before the race start was carried out in the wrong place and hit him with a 30-second penalty that eventually dropped him to fifth.
The French-Italian commented: “This unfortunate situation should not change anything about our performance here this weekend: it was still a fantastic race and most certainly a moral victory for us. The way I see it is that we won this race without taking the points, so there is no reason to be too disappointed. We are on the right road. The car felt fantastic: I have never had so much confidence behind the wheel.”
Unfortunately the 19 year-old was unable to repeat his success during the second race of the weekend, where he qualified 15th due to his problems in the single wet qualifying session. He made no mistakes and gained one position during the race to finish 14th. This currently puts him fourth in the championship.
The next round of the Italian Formula Renault Championship takes place in Misano, Italy, from July 22-23. The week before, he will take part in the next race of the European Formula Renault series, at the same circuit from July 15-16.
