CARBONE FINISHES ON THE PODIUM AT MOTEGI!
Three Bond driver Fabio Carbone has finished on the podium at the third round of the Japanese Formula 3 Championship. The Brazilian was second in race two at Motegi, which means that he currently holds fourth place in the championship with 14 races still to go. The Quadra Sports-backed driver has maintained his impressive record of finishing on the podium at every race meeting so far this year.
Motegi is one of the most unusual and technically challenging tracks on the Japanese calendar, containing a wide variety of corners that require a perfect set-up. Unlike most circuits in Japan, Motegi is totally flat – and there is also an oval circuit for Indycar racing!
During this weekend’s Japanese F3 encounter conditions were wet, making tyre choice extremely unpredictable. Fabio enjoys wet conditions, and his pace was underlined by a second-fastest time in the first free practice session. In qualifying, a good effort from Fabio put him sixth on the grid – but there was still a huge question mark over the weather. Fabio started the race with used wet tyres and a dry set-up, gambling on conditions drying up. Unfortunately the gamble did not pay off: Fabio was one of many drivers who found himself with the wrong set-up for the conditions. He dropped around three seconds per lap, ending up 12th at the chequered flag.
Race two showed Fabio’s real potential. He qualified fourth and made a brilliant start, gaining two more places by the first corner. This time he was on the right set-up, and the result was a well-deserved second place at the finish.
Fabio commented: “It wasn’t an easy weekend, as conditions were tricky and our gamble during the first race put us on the back foot. But neither myself nor the Three Bond team believe in giving up: we attacked race two with everything we could, and everybody can see the end result. I’d like to thank the team for their hard work and now we look forward to consolidating our championship position at the next round.”
The All-Japan Formula 3 Championship resumes at the Aida circuit with rounds seven and eight on June 17-18, after a two-day test at the same venue.
