MORTARA SIXTH IN IMOLA
French-Italian driver Edoardo Mortara has finished sixth in race two at the third round of the Italian Formula Renault Championship at Imola this weekend. During the first race he made an impressive start to climb to fourth, but a tyre came off the wheel rim unexpectedly and pitched him into a gravel trap.
The Prema Powerteam driver is now fourth in the championship with five rounds and 10 races still to run.
The 19 year-old was on the pace all weekend, setting fourth-fastest time in free practice on Friday less than three-tenths of a second off the quickest time. After a couple of small mistakes during his qualifying laps on Saturday, Edoardo qualified fifth for race one and seventh for race two. The qualifying system for Imola was new to the championship, using a single session in which each driver’s two fastest times would determine their place in race one and race two respectively.
Weather conditions for both races on Sunday were warm with occasional gusts of widn. Edoardo got off to an excellent start during race one, and rapidly made up a place to take fourth. Unfortunately a tyre suddenly came off the wheel rim on lap seven, and Edoardo became a passenger as his car was pitched into the gravel trap.
The Premapower mechanics did an excellent job to re-prepare his car for race two later in the afternoon. Once more Edoardo made an excellent start and gained a place. The race was hit by a lengthy safety car period of five laps, depriving Edoardo of a sustained chance to improve his position further. Nonetheless, he was satisfied with sixth place at the finish.
Edoardo said: “We were a bit unlucky with a few things this weekend, but at least we salvaged something from it. Above all, I¹d like to say a big thank you to my Prema Powerteam mechanics, who did an excellent job to prepare my car for the second race after the tyre came off the rim in race one. I really don¹t know what happened: one minute it was there, the next minute I was in the gravel. It was frustrating, but that¹s racing. The main thing is that we have showed we are competitive. My knowledge of set-up is improving all the time we really had a perfect car here. Now I¹m just looking forward to the next race and the chance to continue our good work.”
Edoardo will be in action again at the next round of the Italian Formula Renault championship from June 3-4 at the legendary Spa circuit in Belgium. He will also take part in a Formula Renault Eurocup test at Barcelona in Spain later this week.
